90s nostalgia full-steam ahead with new Netflix show Everything Sucks!

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

So I've been binging THAT 70s SHOW on Netflix the last week (eight seasons takes a while), and it brought back a lot of nostalgic memories. Not for the '70s (I wasn't alive then), but of my friends and I watching THAT 70s SHOW when it aired in the '90s and early '00s. It really captured what it was like to go to high school and hanging out with your friends in a nowhere town with nothing to do – especially since that was still a pre-smartphone era. So I kept thinking: why can't there be a '90s THAT '70s SHOW? Or at least a '90s FREAKS AND GEEKS? Where's my nostalgia, goddammit?!

Well, looks like I won't have to wait too much longer. Apparently Netflix has a 10-episode order for EVERYTHING SUCKS!, a half-hour comedy series that "follows two groups of high school misfits…an A/V club and a Drama club who collide in 1996 Oregon."

The show was created by Ben York Jones and Michael Mohan, who had this to say about it:

Some of our favorite shows of all time — The Wonder Years, Happy Days, That 70s Show, Freaks and Geeks — looked back at bygone eras with 20 years of hindsight. We think this is a great time to take a look back at high school and relive the fashion, music, and attitudes of the mid-’90’s the way we remember it. Not sensationalized, not watered down; but desperate, heartfelt, awkward, and exciting.

And Cindy Holland, Vice President, Original Content for Netflix, added:

Whether you were in A/V, drama, sports or band, we think everyone will find something to relate to in this coming of age story about the one thing that sucks above everything else — high school.

Well, I'm excited (especially since I'm getting tired of '80s nostalgia. Even the great STRANGER THINGS was pushing it for me). It also sounds like it could be fun in general – I'm always a sucker for good coming-of-age stories. But what do you Schmoes think? Anyone raised in the 90s? And if so, this sound appealing to you? Either way, sound off below!

Meanwhile, EVERYTHING SUCKS! will start streaming on Netflix sometime next year.
