Ethan Hawke befriends hostages during a bank heist in Stockholm trailer

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

We all know of the psychological phenomenon known as Stockholm Syndrome, in which hostages begin to sympathize with their captors, but I'll confess to not knowing much regarding the origins of the term. Thanks to the upcoming crime-drama STOCKHOLM, now I know!

STOCKHOLM is based on the 1973 bank heist and hostage crisis which took place at Kreditbanken, one of the largest banks in Stockholm at the time. A convict on parole wound up taking several employees of the bank hostage and successfully negotiated the release of one of his friends from prison. Together, they held the hostages in one of the bank's vaults for several days and even when they finally surrendered, the hostages refused to testify against them "Stockholm will offer moviegoers a raw glimpse into intense events that transpired over four decades ago coining a psychological condition that still intrigues the world today," said Jonathan Kier, Sierra/Affinity’s President of International Sales & Distribution. "With Robert’s creative direction coupled with Ethan and Noomi’s tremendous talents, we are certain audiences around the globe will be captivated by this thrilling true story." The upcoming film stars Ethan Hawke (THE BOY), Noomi Rapace (Jack Ryan), Mark Strong (SHAZAM!), and Christopher Heyerdahl (Hell on Wheels).

STOCKHOLM will open in New York and L.A. on April 12, 2019, with a national roll-out expected to follow.
