Three-hour extended cut of Superman: The Movie is flying to home video!

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Not going to lie, I was never a big fan of SUPERMAN '78, and am wary of people who grew up with it calling it "timeless". However, despite my ambivalence towards it, I can't deny that it was a great achievement nonetheless. It pioneered special effects techniques, it gave legitimacy to comic-book films (which were relegated to B-movie serials before this), and it has the best Superman to date in Christopher Reeve (though I still like Henry Cavill a lot).

And now, fans of the original can enjoy a three-hour extended cut! Originally released in February 1982 on ABC for a two-night broadcast, this cut had forty minutes of extra footage, which will now be included in the new home video release! While a lot of this footage has been seen in deleted scene extras and what-not, this will be the first time it will be available on an official release. The Blu-Ray will also have screen tests, documentaries, and Richard Donner’s definitive director’s cut of the film from 2000.

No official release date as of yet, but we'll keep you posted!
