Wong Kar-Wai will direct Amazon crime series Tong Wars

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Like most cinephiles, I enjoy watching international films whenever I get a chance. It's always great to get out of your comfort zone and see how other cultures make films and tell stories. One of the greatest directors right now, possibly anywhere, is Hong Kong auteur Wong Kar-Wai. His films are beautiful and lyrical, such as his oft-cited masterpiece IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE. However, his last film was 2013's martial arts biopic THE GRANDMASTER, and he's been waiting for the right project to tackle next ever since.

Well it looks like he's finally found it! It's an Amazon Prime series called TONG WARS. Here's the official synopsis for the series, according to Variety:

The series is set against the Tong Wars of 19th century San Francisco and tells a story spanning a significant period of time about Chinese immigrants and the clashes between organized-crime families in the city’s Chinatown.

After their awesome THE TICK reboot, I'll give almost anything Amazon does a chance. And luckily this actually sounds pretty cool, so I'll definitely check it out. But what about you Schmoes? You down for some TONG WARS? Either way, sound off below!

Since it's still early in production, there's no official release date as of yet. But we'll be sure to keep you posted!
