See how Baby Groot was designed and animated for Guardians of the Galaxy 2

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Everyone loves Baby Groot, but have you ever wondered to yourself about how he was created for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2? After all, it often takes an entire team of animators to rig and manipulate just one character. Now, imagine having to operate a character with as much movement and emotional depth as Baby Groot. How does it all come together? What manner of visual reference do you use for inspiration? How do you assure that Baby Groot lives up to the hype?

Well, the technical supervisors and effects team members over at Marvel have some insight into all of that business, and the video posted below will help to answer some of your burning questions. As someone who loves animation, I'd found this video to be a cool bullet-point-like presentation of the laborious process that is digital animation. In the footage, the team touches on several key aspects of what brought the character for life, and even goes so far as to show us how it was all done. Enjoy!

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 will be available on digital release August 8 and on Blu-ray and DVD August 22.
