True Detective may return for a third season with David Milch on board

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

It's been two years since HBO's TRUE DETECTIVE offered fans of the gritty crime drama a second season, with any news of the show returning for a third round left to wander in the wind. From what I can remember, many were disappointed by the events of TRUE DETECTIVE's sophomore effort, so I would imagine that the news of DEADWOOD and NYPD BLUE alum David Milch coming aboard the series potential return will be welcomed news!

Today, it's being reported by Entertainment Weekly that Milch will partner with Nic Pizzolatto to create an engaging third season. Oh wow! Okay, now you've got my attention. Though before you start bouncing off the walls, understand that Milch will serve as a key component in the show's creative process but is not expected to serve as the new showrunner of TRUE DETECTIVE. Furthermore, plans for a third season have yet to be given a greenlight from the powers that be over at HBO so … yeah, while exciting, this news should be taken with a grain of salt at best.

Also, back in July of 2016, head of programming Casey Bloys remarked that, "… both Nic and HBO are open to another season. I don’t think Nic has a take and he’s working on some other projects. We’re open to somebody else writing it and Nic supervising it. It’s a valuable franchise, it’s not dead, we just don’t have a take for a third season yet." That's a hopeful-ass quote at the very least, right? I mean, it sounds like we can count on there being another season of the dark crime series but perhaps it's best to proceed with caution until we hear something super official, yeah? In related news, Matthew McConaughey, who played Detective Rust Cohle in the show's debut season has expressed interest in reprising his role, but as of yet there are no plans to make that happen.

Both seasons of True Detective are available now for your viewing pleasure on Digital, Blu-Ray and DVD formats.
