UPDATE: Mariah Carey joins The Lego Batman Movie as … Commissioner Gordon?

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter is refuting the original story and claims that Mariah Carey is playing the Mayor of Gotham City and not Commissioner Gordon. Our original story follows.

In a very random bit of casting news, singer and occasional actress Mariah Carey is in talks to join the cast of THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE. Carey, whose Oscar-caliber acting talents can be found in films like GLITTER, will voice Commissioner Gordon in the animated spin-off of THE LEGO MOVIE. Carey will join the cast that already includes Will Arnett, Ralph Fiennes, Zach Galifianakis, Rosario Dawson, and Michael Cera. There is no word on whether the filmmakers were drunk or high when the decision was made.

The gender-flipping of comic book characters is nothing new and there is potentially a plot-related reason for the change in the film. In DC Comics, Gordon's daughter Barbara has become involved with law enforcement but Rosario Dawson is already playing Batgirl in the film. As a fan of THE LEGO MOVIE and all of the casting choices to date for THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE, I am not getting too bent out of shape by this news as long as it turns out to have a reason beyond casting a famous name. After all, Glenn Close did get cast as Nova Prime in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, right? I cannot believe I just compared Mariah Carey to Glenn Close.

THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE hits theaters on February 10, 2017.
