The Force Awakens will screen in IMAX theaters for at least one month

For those of you who want to see STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS in IMAX, you're certainly going to get plenty of chances! It was just announced that IMAX has reserved J.J. Abrams' upcoming picture for 4 weeks starting on December 18th.

Previously done with Peter Jackson's HOBBIT trilogy, the one-month IMAX run isn't unheard of but it's certainly uncommon. That also means that any films following THE FORCE AWAKENS' release is less likely to be featured in that format until late January, if at all (looking at you REVENANT). The next film set to hit IMAX theaters is THE FINEST HOURS on January 29th, so if ticket sales are good, STAR WARS could be around a little longer.

IMAX is known for providing superior picture and sound, but there are a select few filmmakers who actually shoot scenes in the true IMAX format. This, in turn, provides an even more immersive experience for the audience. Christopher Nolan showcased much of his latest, INTERSTELlAR, in this format, and J.J. Abrams has confirmed that there was a pivotal action scene in his film also shot this way. The scene in question would be a chase that seemingly starts off on-foot and eventually finds Rey and Finn piloting the Millennium Falcon.  You've seen clips of this in the first teaser, but we have some pictures below that show off both the regular theatrical aspect ratio and the IMAX ratio. See for yourself how much more you get with IMAX!
