There is a certain freedom when you no longer have to portray a character with a massive fanbase. That is not to say it isn't a pleasure and a responsibility to be associated with a particular superhero, but I can only imagine the pressure of having to uphold that brand. Like Uncle Ben said: with great power comes great responsibility. Luckily, Andrew Garfield is not bitter after only portraying Spider-man twice, but he is kind of glad it is over.
Entertainment Tonight got the first comments from Garfield after the announcement that Tom Holland would take over in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR.
"It feels lovely, especially because Tom Holland is a really, really great actor," Garfield told ET's Cameron Mathison at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's Annual Grants Banquet in Beverly Hills on Thursday. "He was in this movie The Impossible and he was just this incredibly powerful, sensitive, just wonderful young actor. And [he's] a dancer, so his body’s the right [form]."
Garfield also says he is glad that he can return to just being a fan of Spider-man and not responsible for carrying the weight of the franchise. Garfield was outspoken about issues with THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 and how studio interference ultimately hurt the movie. I am sure he would have loved to have kept playing the character for the planned third film and villain-centric spin-offs, but ultimately Sony partnered with Marvel to reboot the entire character again.
I enjoyed Andrew Garfield's portrayal of Peter Parker and found him to be closer to the comic book version of the character than Tobey Maguire ever was. We will have to wait and see if Tom Holland can live up to that responsibility himself.
The next SPIDER-MAN hits theaters on July 28, 2017.
