There are more than a few people who think F. Gary Gray would be a perfect fit to helm the planned BLACK PANTHER movie starring Chadwick Boseman, since Marvel reportedly wants an African-American filmmaker for the film, and Gray is a damn fine director. Gray was up for the CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER directing gig before dropping out in order to make STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON, but now that he's done with the N.W.A. biopic, is he interested in possibly taking on BLACK PANTHER?
During an interview with BlackTree TV, F. Gary Gray said he'd love to be behind the camera for a superhero movie, after being asked if he's the running for BLACK PANTHER, and says, "We'll see what happens. If it's right, I'm there!" Although Gray hasn't appeared on any shortlists for the job, he, at the very least, may have been contacted by Marvel to gauge his interest in directing the film.
With all the very positive early reviews STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON has received, if I was Marvel, I would definitely try to land him before he lines something else up as his next project. STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON hits theaters on August 14, while BLACK PANTHER is scheduled to be released on July 6, 2018.
