Mark Ruffalo on Hulk’s worst case scenario in Avengers: Age of Ultron

While the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is pretty well laid out for the next several years, the fate of the Hulk is still a gigantic question mark. Without a standalone film of his own, the breakout character from THE AVENGERS seems to have a very significant role in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. The trailers have teased a spectacular showdown between the green skinned monster and Tony Stark’s Hulkbuster, but how it figures into the plot and the overall direction for Bruce Banner is still unclear.

Mark Ruffalo, the first actor to portray The Hulk for more than a single film (take that, Eric Bana and Edward Norton) shared some insights into where Banner’ head is at in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON with Empire.

“He’s the loose cannon of the group. He’s more like an atom bomb. You could guess where he’s going to go but he could go either way. I think that there is, obviously, the day when everyone expects it to go wrong and that day comes. And they’re ready.”

Ruffalo goes on to say that Banner helped design the contingency plan for if the Hulk went off the rails. I would assume that means the Hulkbuster armor, but it could be something else we haven’t seen yet. Some have theorized it could be shooting Banner into space, a storyline popularized in Marvel Comics’ Planet Hulk event. While Kevin Feige has not been clear that Hulk has any standalone plans in the future, they also have not confirmed where he might turn up next. I guess we have to wait and see.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON hits theaters on May 1, 2015.
