Rejoice fans! Remo Williams is returning to the big screen! Sony Pictures announced today that IRON MAN 3 director Shane Black will direct the big budget adaptation of THE DESTROYER, the novel series starring Remo Williams!

REMO WILLIAMS: THE ADVENTURE BEGINS was the sole outing for the action hero. Since 1985, fans have been clamoring for the return of the character to cinemas. While Fred Ward may be too old to headline, Shane Black and FIGHT CLUB screenwriter Jim Uhls will do their best to uphold the popular character for a new generation. There is no word on who may star in the film, but it will certainly be a big film with franchise potential for Sony.

If you are one of those unlucky few who don’t know who Remo Williams is, here is a rundown.

Newark cop Remo Williams is framed, sentenced to death, then resurrected following a botched execution. The reason? To serve as enforcement arm for CURE, a top-secret, extra-Constitutional arm of the U.S. government. Along with a seemingly ageless – and often hilarious – Asian assassin known only as Chiun, Williams sets out to “clean up” and take out those who oppose America’s interests. The surprisingly-heartfelt stories combine edgy old-school suspense with Eastern mysticism to produce unique, rapid-fire capers full of slick banter, social satire, and sudden violence.

There is no word on how this will affect Black’s developing DOC SAVAGE film, but you can imagine that with Warner Bros launching their own franchise based on THE EXECUTIONER series of novels, THE DESTROYER is going to be fast-tracked. With 37 novels featuring the character, there is plenty to play with or come up with an all new plot for the feature film.

REMO WILLIAMS: THE ADVENTURE BEGINS has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. It is completely ridiculous, over the top, and even has Wilford Brimley! I may have to go pull out my DVD to celebrate!
