Lawrence Kasdan is widely considered the man who saved STAR WARS from George Lucas when he scripted THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. When his name was mentioned along with Simon Kinberg as part of the team working on new STAR WARS films outside of STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, many rejoiced. The question became what those standalone films would focus on. We have heard rumors that they could center on adventures featuring Han Solo, Yoda, Obi-wan Kenobi, and Boba Fett, but we have yet to know for sure which ones to expect come 2016.
In the latest episode of AMC Movie Talk, METALOCALYPSE and VENTURE BROS director Jon Schnepp let loose this little tidbit:
“One of them is Boba Fett,” Schnepp said. “It is. I know. I know for a fact. I will never reveal my source, but it is the one written by Lawrence Kasdan.”
While Kasdan has joined J.J. Abrams in primary writing duties on STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, we know his standalone screenplay was still in development. He was the man responsible for bringing the character to life in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK so he would seem a natural fit to write more about him. Fett received additional backstory in ATTACK OF THE CLONES when we learned about how his father, Jango Fett, played into the creation of the Clone Troopers.
Will this standalone story delve further into his formative years as he becomes a bounty hunter or could we see him emerge from the Sarlacc pit and go on new adventures after the fall of the Empire. Whichever way it goes it is still too early to tell how Schnepp can say he knows a Boba Fett movie is coming with such conviction, but it should rank as good news that Lawrence Kasdan is the one creating it.
STAR WARS: EPISODE VII opens December 18, 2015 with the first standalone film expected the following year.
