After months of speculation, reports have Aaron Taylor-Johnson finally sealing the deal to play Quicksilver in Joss Whedon‘s THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. The British actor best known as the star of KICK-ASS and Oliver Stone‘s SAVAGES has been the top contender for the Marvel character being introduced in the sequel. Elizabeth Olsen, Taylor-Johnson’s GODZILLA costar, is still the leading candidate to play Quicksilver’s sister, Scarlet Witch.

The Wrap reported on the deal between Marvel and the actor saying that the delay was due to THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON overlapping filming with the promotional schedule for GODZILLA. With details squared away between Disney, Marvel, and Legendary, the path was cleared for the role to be made official.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson will now play Pietro Maximoff, the son of Magneto, who possesses superhuman speed like The Flash. Quicksilver will also be making an appearance in Bryan Singer‘s X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, played by Evan Peters, in which Magneto is a character. It remains to be seen if Magneto will be excised completely from the AVENGERS plot or if some sort of reference will be hidden.

Taylor-Johnson previously had this to say about his rumored link to the role of Quicksilver:

“I think when it comes around and you’re asking about ‘Avengers 2’ and Quicksilver and things like that, the thing is to think about that he’s an abandoned child. Him and his sister are abandoned, they live in Eastern Europe. And if that’s something that you can make work, then there’s always… you gotta have something that you can relate to. So when it comes to that, then it’s enjoyable. So I don’t really care what it is you know.”

Aaron Taylor-Johnson joins the star-studded cast that also features Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson and James Spader as Ultron. THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON hits theaters on May 1, 2015.
