Yesterday, we finally got a look at DISTRICT 9 director Neil Blomkamp’s ELYSIUM, starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, and Sharlto Copley and it was an impressive slice of sci-fi cinema to be sure. It looked more like an evolution of Blomkamp’s DISTRICT 9 than a wholly new genre piece as he’s not budging much from his class warfare themes and epic sci-fi weapons and gadgets. Still, the movie looks like a blast and has more than enough visual punch and characters to move past any of the “sameness” from DISTRICT 9, which stands as one of my all-time favorite sci-fi pics.

Now that the cat’s out of the bag, the studio has opened up the official site and started sharing more images and info on the film, starting with a nice batch of new images featuring the cast (as well as the director) in their various get-ups from the film. I’m most looking forward to seeing Sharlto Copley as a villain more than anything. We already know that Damon can play a bad ass and Foster can play whatever she wants, but Copley as a sadistic villain is something entirely new and I look forward to the scene-chewing smorgasbord that will ensue.

Here’s the synopsis:

In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the planet’s crime and poverty, and they critically need the state-of-the-art medical care available on Elysium – but some in Elysium will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve their citizens’ luxurious lifestyle. The only man with the chance to bring equality to these worlds is Max (Matt Damon), an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission – one that pits him against Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) and her hard-line forces – but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well.

ELYSIUM, starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, William Fichtner, Alice Braga, Diego Luna, and Wagner Moura starts pitting the dirty poor vs. the filthy rich on August 9, 2013.
