Another hero joins the roster of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, and she is going to get to add another color to her acting palette. Zoe Saldana, star of both STAR TREK and AVATAR, will get painted green for her role as Gamora.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Saldana is in final negotiations, which means this is likely a lock, but you never know. Gamora will be the third member of the Guardians after Chris Pratt‘s Peter Quinn and Dave Bautista‘s Drax the Destroyer. The remaining members are Groot and Rocket Raccoon, who are likely going to be motion captured.

Gamora is a significant character in that she was raised by the villain Thanos, who imbued her with her powers. She eventually turned on him, which could provide a huge moment in the movie. The question remains if she will serve as a villain to start the film and then join the Guardians at the end similarly to Hulk in THE AVENGERS.

Latino Review is reporting that another major piece of the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY puzzle may be the villain is not directly Thanos but rather The Controller. The Controller. aka Basil Sandhurst, is a Marvel villain most commonly associated with Iron Man, but is also a major henchman for Thanos. This would account for the rumors of a Tony Stark appearance in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and would also setup Thanos well for THE AVENGERS 2 the following year.

Whichever way this goes, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is assembling quite the roster. I like the Chris Pratt casting and think Bautista has the physical presence for Drax. Saldana is sexy as hell and has shown she can work in sci-fi/fantasy with the best of them. I am very intrigued by where this is going and hope we get some more news very soon.

James Gunn will begin filming GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY this summer for an August 1, 2014 release date.
