So it seems that THE AVENGERS will not be the only Marvel franchise to introduce a major villain in an upcoming film. From the looks of it, one of the X-Men’s major adversaries may be the big baddie in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. The good folks over at Bleeding Cool seem to have put two and two together to uncover this news.

In a recent interview with Singer, the site asked him if he would ever consider using Apocalypse as the main antagonist in a future movie. What was Singer’s reply?

“I can’t tell you…”

Not exactly a confirmation, but they continued to probe about the ancient villain. They described Singer as nervous at being asked these questions directly. And Singer followed up with this.

“This is how it gets started, when somebody starts piecing the little bits together…”

Here’s a little back story for those of you unfamiliar with Apocalypse: Apocalypse is a mutant born 5000 years ago in Akkaba, and was abandoned as an infant due to his unnatural appearance (gray skin and blue lips). As the millennia pass, Apocalypse travels around the world to determine if his time of testing has come. He appears throughout history, encouraging civilizations to worship him as a god from several ancient mythologies and testing their strength by manipulating them into fighting wars of conquest, and claiming to have brought “growth, judgment, and destruction.” He battles the X-Men on numerous occassions, including the very famous arc know as Age of Apocalypse, which involves time travel and alternate histories. (Thanks, Wikipedia!)

Could this be the role that Peter Dinklage was cast for? We were told before that Dinklage would not be altered on screen and Apocalypse is a very large character. Apocalypse would also be a character that could re-unite Magneto and Xavier’s mutant teams to battle a larger foe. This could be quite a large endeavor and would point to Fox’s attempt to match the audacity of Disney and Marvel. Or, could this be the setup to introduce the villain for the follow up to X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST?

Looks like we will find out when the movie is released on July 18, 2014.
