For those of you who have seen the first two seasons of THE WALKING DEAD and have read the comics, you are fully aware that the television series differs both in plots and characters. Comic creator Robert Kirkman has stated that he wants the show to be a unique experience for viewers and comic fans, which explains the prolonged fate for Shane on the series.
Even in the Comic Con trailer for the third season, we can see that The Governor does not physically resemble his comic book counterpart at all. But, at the same time, the show has maintained the general structure of having the characters move from Atlanta to Hershell’s farm to the prison.
With the prison being the central focus of the third season, I would assume the season will end with the large scale battle between the forces of The Governor and Rick’s group. If that does happen, will Lori’s fate follow what happens in the comic?
Sarah Wayne Callies, who plays Lori Grimes on the show, told The Hollywood Reporter this: “Frank Darabont and I actually — before he was tragically and unfairly removed from the show — we used to argue about it,” Callies says. “I argued that it was necessary to kill Lori and I feel very strongly that for all of the other deviations we may have from the comic book, killing Lori does something to Rick that is vital for the story and can’t be done any other way. I’ve said from the beginning, not only am I OK with Lori dying but I think she has to. I’ve played this character with an eye toward an end.”
Lori’s death in the comic was one of the most gut-wrenching moments I have read in any book, comic or otherwise. The way that Rick’s character develops after the prison will not work if Lori is rewritten and survives. I will say that I thoroughly enjoyed how the series version of Shane was altered and enhanced, but Lori’s character won’t work in the same manner.
I highly doubt the series will be able to use Lori’s death exactly as it occurs in the comic. If they do, they are braver than I give them credit for. It would no doubt be one of the most stunning and shocking moments in television history.
