Just one day after it was announced Warner Bros. was moving forward with an adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Stand” with HARRY POTTER duo David Yates and Steve Kloves, we get word that Jonathan Demme (SILENCE OF THE LAMBS) has optioned the rights to King’s upcoming novel 11/22/63.
11/22/63 doesn’t hit bookshelves until November but early manuscripts have been floating around Hollywood and Demme moved quickly to grab the rights. Demme would write and direct the project, his first film since 2008’s RACHEL GETTING MARRIED.
The novel follows an English teacher from Maine (natch) who finds a portal to the 1950s in a local diner. He zaps back in time with the purpose of stopping the JFK assassination but gets a little bit more than he bargained for.
As of now, the production isn’t financed or set up at any studio. Should it actually move ahead, King would executive produce the film.
Along with THE STAND, it’s just one of a number of King films in the production pipeline along with remakes of CARRIE, IT and PET SEMATARY.
