If you haven’t read the series, you probably don’t understand just how ambitious the upcoming adaptation of the Stephen King’s THE DARK TOWER series will be.

The massive, mind-bending books are being turned into a series of TV episodes of and movies, and all attached to the project are going to find themselves committed to the epic saga for years.

So far, Ron Howard and Akiva Goldsman are the principles, with Javier Bardem incredibly close to closing a deal to play lead gunslinger Roland Deschain (no! Get Viggo!). But now someone else is joining the team, Battlestar Galactica writer Mark Verheiden.

He’s also worked on Heroes, Falling Skies and a whole host of comics from Superman to Batman, but this will undoubtedly be his most ambitious effort to date. Battlestar and The Dark Tower may have geeky fanbases attached to each, but their similarities end there, and this will be a challenge for all involved.

Just understanding the scope of this project, I still have my lingering doubts we’ll ever see this made, but the first movie does have a release date, May 17th, 2013.
