Disney will not be moving forward with Joseph Kosinski’s adaptation of OBLIVION, which was recently retitled, HORIZONS. The story was adapted from the graphic novel which was created by Kosinski, written by Arvid Nelson and illustrated by Andree Wallin.
The story “is set in a future where the Earth’s surface has been irradiated beyond recognition and the remnants of humanity live above the clouds, safe from the brutal alien Scavengers that stalk the ruins. But when surface drone repairman Jak discovers a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod, it sets off an unstoppable chain of events that will force him to question everything he knows.”
Why would Disney drop the dark sci-fi project? According to THR, the studio was uncomfortable making a PG-13 film with Kosinski pushing for the project to have some edge. Kosinski who directed TRON: LEGACY for the house of mouse, still has a strong relationship with the studio. HORIZONS is now being shopped around and has picked up some interest from Warner Bros, Fox, Universal, and Paramount. Before dropping the project, Disney was in the design stages and had interest from Tom Cruise who was a fan of the project.
Radical Publishing will release the 128-page graphic novel this Summer.
