I guess we won’t be seeing Rosamund Pike as Ursa in the new Superman film. Looks like the lovely blonde has taken the role of Andromeda in CLASH OF THE TITANS 2.
Well, maybe the second will be better than than the first? Jonathan Liebesman (BATTLE: LOST ANGELES) is stepping in for Louis Leterrier to tackle directing duties. I really hope he comes through. CLASH was a big letdown in my opinion. I spent my time thinking, “This is going to be awesome!” and it wasn’t awesome.
It was thought at one time that Pike would end up with the role of Emma Frost in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, but instead January Jones got the part.
In Greek mythology, Andromeda was the daughter of Cepheus and Cassiopeia, king and queen of the kingdom Ethiopia. In Leterrier’s film, Cassiopeia was played by two different actresses, Polly Walker played the younger version and Katherine Loeppky was the elder.
Here’s the mythology behind Andromeda: “Her mother Cassiopeia boasted that she was more beautiful than the Nereids, the nymph-daughters of the sea god Nereus and often seen accompanying Poseidon. To punish the Queen for her arrogance, Poseidon, brother to Zeus and god of the sea, sent a sea monster (Cetus) to ravage the coast of Ethiopia including the kingdom of the vain Queen. The desperate King consulted the Oracle of Apollo, who announced that no respite would be found until the king sacrificed his virgin daughter Andromeda to the monster. She was chained naked to a rock on the coast.”
“Perseus was returning from having slain the Gorgon Medusa, he found Andromeda and slew Cetus by aproaching invisable with Hades’s helm and slaying him. He set her free, and married her in spite of Andromeda having been previously promised to her uncle Phineus. At the wedding a quarrel took place between the rivals, and Phineus was turned to stone by the sight of the Gorgon’s head.”
