UPDATE – No surprise here. Sony Pictures, which released Blomkamp’s DISTRICT 9, has won the rights to ELYSIUM, paying a whopping $120 million.
Today Neill Blomkamp has been meeting with studios to find a home for his next sci-fi flick, ELYSIUM.
Blomkamp, Modi Wiczyk and Simon Kinberg (who’s producing with Bill Block) have been doing the studio rounds, meeting with the big wigs that have read the script, who then get a storyboard presentation from the director. They are going to every studio except for Disney. They don’t do the R-rated stuff obviously.
Deadline, who broke the news, say that this movie will have a social allegory just like DISTRICT 9 did. It’s also a big movie set 1000 years in the future and will have tons of gadgetry. The sets for the film will be designed by Syd Mead (BLADE RUNNER, TRON) who is well versed in the world of sci-fi surroundings. Apparently Mead isn’t the easiest guy to hire but decided to do this because he liked D9.
ELYSIUM will prep in April then start production in May. The first location on the map is Vancouver then off to New Mexico in the Fall. Matt Damon, Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley are set to star.
Like he’s going to have a hard time trying to sell this project. Blomkamp’s name alone could sell any movie idea.
