J. Edgar gains Gossip Girl’s Ed Westwick and loses Charlize Theron (but is she now up for the Alien prequel?)

Clint Eastwood’s biopic J. EDGAR continues to take form as new casting news comes down the pike (and old rumors crash and burn). Deadline is reporting that “Gossip Girl” heartthrob Ed Westwick (S. DARKO, CHILDREN OF MEN) has landed a “major supporting role” in the drama centered around the famed FBI director.

Deadline says that Westwick “will play a clean cut operative with writing skill. Once Hoover discovers he can write, he conscripts Agent Smith to write Hoover’s biography, until Smith gets a little too close to the truth.”

Now, what of statuesque beauty Charlize Theron? Despite the recent rumors that she would be likely joining the growing cast in the role of Hoover’s personal secretary ‘Helen Gandy’, Vulture is now reporting that apparently Theron “never actually planned on accepting” the part. Instead, she will be moving ahead with the fairy tale flick SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN.

But with the death of one rumor comes the birth of a whole new one! Vulture adds in their report that 20th Century Fox is interested in getting Theron for Ridley Scott’s ALIEN prequel in the role of ‘Vickers’ – “a fortysomething, tough-but-sexy crewmember.” That role was originally being linked to actress Michelle Yeoh, but Fox apparently feels that a name with more star power needs to enter the equation.

“Knowledgeable insiders say that Fox execs are nervous about pinning Scott’s costly CGI movie on such lesser-known actors like [Noomi] Rapace and, should a deal be made with him, Michael Fassbender, or Yeoh, and so wanted a bigger name for the part of Vickers.”

“We’re told that Fox is having the role rewritten so that it’s larger and befitting, if not of Theron, than at least of someone of Theron’s stature.”
