Just a few weeks after it was revealed that the V/H/S franchise would be entering the SCP Foundation universe with V/H/S: SCP, it turns out that won’t be the next installment in the long-running horror anthology series after all. Instead, Shudder has announced that the franchise will return this fall with V/H/S/MIXTAPE, which is set to premiere on the streaming service on October 9.
The announcement confirms that V/H/S/MIXTAPE will arrive ahead of V/H/S: SCP, which was previously reported to be targeting a 2027 theatrical release following Spooky Pictures and Image Nation Abu Dhabi’s acquisition of the franchise rights earlier this year.
Like its predecessors, V/H/S/MIXTAPE brings together an eclectic lineup of filmmakers. The anthology features segments directed by Ernest Dickerson (Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight), RZA (The Man with the Iron Fists), David Moreau (Mads), and Renee Zhan (O Black Hole!). Zhan’s segment will also include original creature creations from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.
The film will also feature music video interludes directed by Flying Lotus, while Ghost frontman Tobias Forge makes his directorial debut with a music video segment. Heavy metal legends GWAR are also set to appear.
According to the official synopsis, V/H/S/MIXTAPE will push the franchise in a new direction by making music itself the source of terror:
“V/H/S/MIXTAPE cranks the signature found-footage horror up to eleven with an electrifying new anthology where music and sound become the source of terror. United by a theme that explores the power of music, rhythm, and audio to haunt, possess, and destroy, the film blends cosmic horror, psychological suspense, outrageous splatter, and groundbreaking practical effects into one unforgettable mixtape of nightmares.”
The producing team remains familiar to longtime fans of the franchise, with Josh Goldbloom, Steven Schneider, Roy Lee, Michael Schreiber, and Brad Miska serving as producers. Ben Ross and Rami Yassin executive produce.
The V/H/S franchise first launched in 2012 and has enjoyed a remarkable resurgence since moving to Shudder. Following the original trilogy, the series returned with V/H/S/94 in 2021 and has since maintained an annual release schedule with V/H/S/99, V/H/S/85, V/H/S/Beyond, and last year’s V/H/S/Halloween.
That revival has proven to be a major success for the streaming service. According to Shudder, V/H/S/Halloween became the most-watched exclusive film premiere of 2025 across Shudder and AMC+, while also delivering the platform’s biggest subscriber acquisition weekend of the year.
While V/H/S/MIXTAPE will continue the franchise’s yearly anthology tradition, V/H/S: SCP still remains on the horizon. Announced last month, that project will mark the first feature-length adaptation of the SCP Foundation universe and will be framed as recovered field documentation collected by the mysterious organization as different containment breaches unfold. The film is currently targeting a 2027 theatrical release.
For now, however, V/H/S fans won’t have to wait that long. V/H/S/MIXTAPE premieres exclusively on Shudder on October 9, bringing another collection of found-footage nightmares before the franchise makes its ambitious leap into the SCP universe.
