Do you need some more movie weirdness in your life?
If so, then you’ll be pleased to know that Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze are getting back to the writer/director relationship. The pair worked on two off the wall movies together– ADAPTATION and BEING JOHN MALKOVICH. Jonze would get behind the camera and Kaufman would bang a script out.
The two are pitching a new film and the plot is being kept under tight wraps. A couple of people familiar with the project say that it has been getting around to independent financiers in the past few weeks.
Last time the duo worked together was on ADAPTATION in 2002. In 2008, Kaufman took the place of Jonze to direct SYNECDOCHE, N.Y.. Jonze ended up producing on the film. Kaufman has recently been working on a scripted titled, FRANK OR FRANCIS. It’s a satire in the form of a musical and has art imitating life. This is the premise: “a director embraced for broadly commercial hits resents his success and wants to be considered an auteur and artiste; one imagines it as a bizarre-o world version of Kaufman himself, who hasn’t made any broadly commercial movies and has in fact been embraced as an auteur and artiste.”
FRANK OR FRANCIS has a home at Sony, but isn’t currently moving along. Jonze has been looking for a new film to work on so this collaboration between him and Kaufman may end up being it.
