Guillermo del Toro-produced horror flick Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark gets delayed

Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard’s CABIN IN THE WOODS isn’t the only upcoming horror movie that’s completed but caught in limbo because of studio problems.

Now the remake of DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK has been bounced from its planned release on January 21, 2011 — because it’s a Miramax movie and that sub-studio is currently in the process of being sold by Disney.

The movie (along with the Sam Worthington starrer THE DEBT) will find a new distribution partner after the deal finishes, but likely won’t be rescheduled for release until later in 2011.

An update of a lesser-known (but still freaky) 1973 TV movie, DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK was directed by Troy Nixey, and got a great reaction when it was previewed at this summer’s Comic Con.

The synopsis: Sally Hurst (Bailee Madison), a lonely withdrawn child, has just arrived in Rhode Island to live with her father Alex (Guy Pearce) and his new girlfriend Kim (Katie Holmes) at the 19th-century mansion they are restoring. While exploring the sprawling estate, the young girl discovers a hidden basement, undisturbed since the strange disappearance of the mansion’s builder a century ago. When Sally unwittingly lets loose a race of ancient, dark-dwelling creatures who conspire to drag her down into the mysterious house’s bottomless depths, she must convince Alex and Kim that it’s not a fantasy—before the evil lurking in the dark consumes them all.
