My appreciation for the PS3 videogame UNCHARTED was somehow eclipsed by its sequel, which proved to be an even more polished and cinematic experience. And perfect material for a movie adaptation, as Sony also believes.
According to the LA Times, Sony also thinks that nefarious director David O. Russell (THREE KINGS, I ♥ HUCKABEES) is the right guy for the job. Or is at least someone they’re seriously considering — Russell is on a short list of wanted men being courted for the job.
Russell recently finished the Beantown boxing drama THE FIGHTER, and has been linked to an adaptation of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES, starring Natalie Portman. He’d be the latest non-traditional choice to direct a big action tentpole movie (Bill Condon – TWILIGHT BREAKING DAWN; Rob Marshall – PIRATES 4; Kenneth Branagh – THOR; Marc Webb – SPIDER-MAN reboot).
The first game’s story revolves around Fillion-esque fortune hunter Nathan Drake, who follows the clues of his (believed) distant relative Sir Francis Drake on a quest for El Dorado, the legendary city of gold. Along the way, he and his comrades (accidental or otherwise) encounter pirates, mercenaries, ancient relics and strange creatures.
The script, which presumably uses the first game as a template, comes from Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (CONAN, COWBOYS & ALIENS) and reportedly thrilled the studio enough to get the movie into the production pipe ASAP.
