Angelina Jolie is feeling Maleficent

Mirror, mirror, on the wall. Who’s got the sweetest lips of all?

Just days after it was confirmed that Disney is spinning off its SLEEPING BEAUTY with the evil fairy godmother movie MALEFICENT, we have a leading contender to wear the black. According to the LA Times, A-list lovely Angelina Jolie is intrigued by the idea of playing the devious villainess of the title and is “actively engaging with the material.”

Of course, at this point it remains just talk — the script is currently in process with Disney regular Linda Woolverton (BEAUTY AND THE BEAST) writing for her ALICE IN WONDERLAND collaborator Tim Burton to potentially direct. But having someone of Jolie’s status attached would obviously fire the project straight to a quick greenlight.

In Disney’s original 1959 version of the classic fairy tale, Maleficent is a wicked sorceress who curses Princess Aurora to die on her 16th birthday. A good fairy counterspell puts her in slumber until she can be revived by the valiant Prince Phillip, whose vow to save his beloved involves confronting the overwhelming forces of evil conjured up by the terrifying Maleficent.
