Back before Christmas, filmmaker James Cameron was somewhat hesitant to seriously discuss the possibility of an AVATAR sequel. While he did admit to having “some story ideas for how to branch out into the other moons of Polyphemus [the giant planet that Pandora orbits], we gotta make some money with this one before we think about the sequel!”
More than a billion bucks later (and the #2 spot on the all-time moneymaker list), Jim seems a little more confident. Apparently an AICN reader was just at an AVATAR screening at L.A.’s Arclight Theater, and at the afterglow Q&A, Cameron was asked point-blank if there would be more. His response? The plan was always to make a trilogy (yeah, naturally) and that “Yes, there’ll be another.“
While the really hard part [creating all the tech] is already done, obviously this just raises more questions. Where would Cameron take a sequel’s story? How much additional scrutiny and criticism would it receive for being contrived? How much more viewer depression would it cause for not being real? How would it piss off certain political parties? And what does that mean for the endlessly-in-development BATTLE ANGEL ALITA, or any of his other plans?
I don’t have any answers, but I sure do adore Zoe Saldana. Blue or otherwise.
