The amazing world of movie ideas takes another one from Hasbro, the game of RISK.
Sony has acquired the movie rights to RISK, the game where one must dominate the world. The film will be produced and developed by Hasbro’s Brian Goldner, Bennett Schneir and Overbrook Entertainment’s James Lassiter. Lassiter has produced several Will Smith movies like I, ROBOT, SEVEN POUNDS, and is also doing work with Smith’s son Jayden on KUNG FU KID.
Sony president Doug Belgrad is looking to films like GI JOE and TRANSFORMERS saying that the audience has, “Shown a great desire for films that bring to life everything that has made these franchise properties stand the test of time. The strategic thinking and the tactical gambles that players must take in the game are what make RISK a classic, thoroughly engaging game. Those elements translated into an action-packed, thrilling story are what will make this a uniquely exciting movie.”
I love playing Risk, even though I really suck at it and I’m pretty sure everytime we play it, we’re playing it wrong. As far as Risk becoming a movie, it seems pretty average. There’s not much of a story that comes with the board game. They didn’t have to secure the rights to Risk to make a movie about world domination, but I suppose having a well known name on it helps. Maybe they’ll get something out of it, but it won’t be as good as CLUE.
