Patty and Selma rejoice. Your beloved secret agent MacGyver is coming to the big screen. “MacGyver”, the science-oriented adventure series that ran from 1985 to 1992 on ABC, and that turned Richard Dean Anderson into a sex symbol for lonely housewives everywhere, has become embedded in popular culture but in a kitschy, awkward kind of way. Do we really want to see the hero who was known for his unmatched resourcefulness, ability to escape dangerous situations, and awful haircut in movie theatres?
Super-producer Dino De Laurentiis and his daughter Raffaella seem to think so, and have teamed with the original series creator Lee Zlotoff to revive the iconic character in a feature film that perhaps will find the same audience that kept the series on the air for nearly a decade. No writer, director or cast has been set, so we have no idea what type of film they’ll make. Will it be a straight-faced, updated version of the series, or will it be a tongue-in-cheek comedy starring Seth Rogen as the titular character? I say go with the latter; only way I’m seeing it that’s for sure.
