After returning to classic gangster mode with THE DEPARTED, Martin Scorsese is looking to veer off in a completely different direction – a kids movie. Scorsese is in talks to direct THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET, a children’s novel by Brian Selznick. Warner Bros. and producer Graham King (the same team behind DEPARTED) acquired the rights to the book for Scorsese. The book follows a 12-year-old boy living in a train station at the turn of the 20th century. His father, a museum curator, dies but not before showing him his latest discovery – a robot sitting at a desk waiting to deliver an important message, if only they could turn him on. The young boy becomes obsessed with solving the mystery in his father’s memory to find out the robot’s secret. John Logan, who worked with Scorsese on THE AVIATOR, is working on the script. Scorsese hasn’t decided on his next project and likely wouldn’t do so until after the Academy Awards. Other projects on his plate include SILENCE, LAST DUEL and the rumored DEPARTED sequel/prequel.
