Last month, we learned that Henry Cavill will be starring in the Netflix series The Witcher, which is based on a series of fantasy novels by Andrzej Sapkowski that has also inspired a popular video game franchise. As the project heads toward production, we now know who will be starring in the series with Cavill.
Anya Chalotra is set to play the sorceress Yennefer, love interest to Cavill's character Geralt of Rivia and mother figure to Princess Ciri. Ciri is being played by Freya Allan (pictured above). Other newly announced cast members include Jodhi May as Queen Calanthe; Bjorn Hlynur Haraldsson as her husband, the knight Eist; Adam Levy as the druid Mousesack; MyAnna Buring as the head of the magical academy at Aretuza, Tissaia; Mimi Ndiweni and Therica Wilson-Read as novice sorcerers; and Millie Brady as the outcast Princess Renfri.
I have never played a Witcher video game or read a novel written by Sapkowski, so I have little idea what to expect from this show or its characters. I do know that the first season of The Witch is expected to consist of eight episodes and will tell
an epic tale of fate and family. Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.
That sounds interesting enough to me.
This adaptation of The Witcher has been developed for Netflix by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, who serves as showrunner and executive producer. Alik Sakharov is also executive producing the series and will be directing four of the eight episodes. The other four will be evenly split between Alex Garcia Lopez and Charlotte Brändström.
