New Line Cinema has tasted success and they want more. Once known as "The House That Freddy Built" because they were fueled by the classic NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET movies, New Line is now back in the horror business in a major way thanks to James Wan and the Conjuring Universe, as well as Andy Muschietti's adaptations of Stephen King's IT.
Last year, New Line released the first IT movie on the Friday following Labor Day in September. The film had a $123 million opening weekend and went on to earn over $700 million worldwide, just under half of that at the domestic box office.
This year, they released THE NUN on the Friday following Labor Day. It made over $50 million its opening weekend and its current worldwide total of $336 million makes it the highest-grossing film in the entire Conjuring franchise.
Realizing that they've got a good thing going here, New Line intends to release horror movies on the Friday following Labor Day every year for at least the next four years.
IT: CHAPTER TWO was already scheduled to reach theatres on September 6, 2019. Now we know that we'll be getting an untitled Conjuring Universe movie on September 11, 2020, then untitled and mysterious horror releases the following two years, on September 10, 2021 and September 9, 2022.
THE CONJURING 3 recently found a director in THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA's Michael Chaves, but it's not certain that's the Conjuring Universe film set to be released on September 11, 2020.
I'm all for New Line Cinema bringing us new horror movies every September. That sounds like a good plan to me.
