The third season of the HBO crime anthology series True Detective is continuing to shape up quite nicely, with four new cast members having now signed on to co-star with the previously announced Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, Stephen Dorff, Scoot McNairy, and Mamie Gummer.
Written by series creator Nic Pizzolatto (with Deadwood's David Milch earning a co-writing credit on one episode), this new season is aiming to redeem the show after its poorly received second season with the story of
a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.
Ali and Dorff play Arkansas police detectives who deal with a baffling crime that haunts them for years. Ejogo's character is a schoolteacher with a connection to two missing children in 1980. McNairy plays a father who suffers a terrible loss, and Gummer plays a mother of two children who finds herself involved in a crime.
Joining them in the cast are Ray Fisher (who played Cyborg in JUSTICE LEAGUE) as the son of Ali's character, along with THE PURGE's Rhys Wakefield (pictured above), Fear the Walking Dead's Michael Greyeyes, and Jon Tenney (LEGION, THE STEPFATHER) in recurring roles.
The only details given about these characters were their names, but there was a mix-up with the reveal of those names, the wrong ones being assigned to the wrong actors, so let's not worry about the names for now. Names don't really matter until the show introduces the characters.
Pizzolatto will be making his directorial debut on the show this season, sharing directing duties with MURDER PARTY / BLUE RUIN / GREEN ROOM's Jeremy Saulnier. Even if the story didn't sound interesting and even if I didn't like the actors involved, I would still check out this season just because of Saulnier. Thankfully everything about this season is sounding good to me.
Executive produced by Scott Stephens, Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Steve Golin, Bard Dorros, Richard Brown, Saulnier, and Pizzolato (who is also the showrunner), the new season of True Detective is set to reach HBO airwaves in 2019.
