Scarlett Johansson appears in first Ghost in the Shell image

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Like it or not, Paramount is making a live action adaptation of the popular Japanese anime GHOST IN THE SHELL. With Rupert Sanders (SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN) at the helm, the film is now in production, and the first image has arrived online to give a look at Scarlett Johansson in the lead role of Major,

a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.

I haven't seen the anime, but from the pictures of the animated version of Major that are online it does appear that the filmmakers have at least attempted to replicate her haircut with Johansson's look in this film.

Co-starring with Johansson are Michael Pitt, Pilou Asbæk, Juliette Binoche, Beat Takeshi, Kaori Momoi, Chin Han, Danusia Samal, Lasarus Ratuere, Yutaka Izumihara, and Tuwanda Manyimo.

By this time next year, GHOST IN THE SHELL will already be in theatres. It's scheduled for release on March 31, 2017.
