Scream Factory, the horror division of the DVD distributor Shout Factory, has recently been at the forefront of the obscure/rare horror home video game, bestowing fans with a bevy of awesome titles like DEADLY BLESSING, THE NEST, TERROR VISION, THE ISLAND and DEATH VALLEY. Some of these have never seen a DVD before, so a big time hat tip to the Scream folks for unearthing these goods. (Of course, they’re also gifting us with polished versions of HALLOWEEN III, THEY LIVE, THE FUN HOUSE and TERROR TRAIN, which we’re also appreciative of.) Today, the Scream Factory has given us further reason to praise them with the announcement of two additional flicks they’ll be reviving.
As per the company’s official Facebook page: Surprise!! We have TWO movies to reveal for you today!. At long last, THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN (1976) and THE EVICTORS (1979) – both from the same Director – are finally coming out.
The director of both films is Charles B. Pierce, who helmed the 1972 “classic” BOGGY CREEK.
THE EVICTORS stars Vic Morrow as a creepy real estate agent who introduces a young couple to a quaint Louisiana farmhouse, neglecting to inform them of its horrific, blood-spattered past. As bizarre events begin to plague the couple, their suspicions that the place may be haunted slowly give way to the notion that someone is trying to scare them silly.
Meanwhile, in THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN, a Texas Ranger hunts for a hooded serial killer terrorizing the residents of a small town, set in 1946 Arkansas.
I must confess to having never seen THE EVICTORS, but THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN is a strange, compelling low-budget effort that can be caught on Turner Classic Movies and Netflix from time to time. The flick’s influence can certainly be felt in everything from FRIDAY THE 13th PART II to the films of Rob Zombie. In fact, I’m somewhat surprised that it hasn’t been put into the remake-o-matic yet.
No word on when these titles will be released, but we’ll keep you posted.
