Two weeks ago word came out that 20th Century Fox had been courting Tim Burton to adapt the horror fantasy novel MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN. No official deal between the two has been announced, but it looks like the studio has found their willing and able scribe.
Deadline has it that Jane Goldman (KICK ASS, THE WOMAN IN BLACK, seen right) is in talks to adapt the Ransom Riggs novel to script form. As with Burton, no deal has been struck yet, but given Goldman’s track record with the studio, having written X-MEN: FIRST CLASS and its upcoming sequel, it’s probably more about when than if she’ll take PECULIAR CHILDREN. In fact, seeing how X-MEN too is about peculiar children, it seems an obvious choice that Goldman write the screenplay.
Speaking of, the story centers on a boy who grows up enraptured by his grandfather’s tale of an island of monsters and kids with powers. When his grandfather is killed, the now-16-year old boy finds himself on the island, exploring the ruins of an abandoned orphanage and discovering that the stories he heard were not only true, but only he can help stop the remaining hidden children – living in a time loop – from creatures who would destroy them.
Hopefully confirmation comes soon with both Burton and Goldman, with casting to follow suit.
