Lionsgate wants Slumdog Millionaire scribe Simon Beaufoy for Hunger Games sequel

Never too early to get a jump on the next entry…

And that folks, is exactly the thinking of Lionsgate, which is said to be eyeing Oscar winning scribe Simon Beaufoy (SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE) for the sequel to the yet to be released HUNGER GAMES. Those familiar with the Suzanne Collins novel trilogy know the second installment is called CATCHING FIRE. Word from Deadline is HUNGER GAMES director Gary Ross will return to the director’s chair for the second film in the series.

No telling if Beaufoy will accept, but it seems he may have some free time after seeing his last script, SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN, got made by Lasse Halstrom earlier this year. Still, it’s an interesting target by Lionsgate, which isn’t typically known for culling Oscar winning talent (at least in the past). Should be an interesting development…

As for CATCHING FIRE, here’s a semi-spoilerish break-down:

Much to her shock, Katniss has fueled an unrest she’s afraid she cannot stop. And what scares her more is that she’s not entirely convinced she should try. As time draws near for Katniss and Peeta to visit the districts on the Capitol’s cruel Victory Tour, the stakes are higher than ever. If they can’t prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that they are lost in their love for each other, the consequences will be horrifying.

Reminder: THE HUNGER GAMES opens March 23rd.
