F*ck fairies and witches…try testing the Jersey Devil!

Temporarily refusing to branch out from the genre that made him, “True Blood” star Stephen Moyer (seen above) has just committed to starring in Darren Lynn Bousman’s newest horror thread, THE BARRENS.

Word comes from Variety, which cites The Genre Company as producer and Anchor Bay as distributor. Dubbed as a SHINING-esque tale, the plan is to release the film in the fall of 2012.

Based on the legend known as The Jersey Devil, Moyer will play a man who takes his family on a camping trip to the more than 1 million acres of dense forest known as the New Jersey Pine Barrens, where he becomes convinced they’re being stalked by the legendary winged monster that looks like a deformed hybrid of several different animals.

As a west coaster, I’ve never really heard of The Jersey Devil. Apparently its lore is steeped in great history, ranking the mythological beastie up there with The Lochness Monster, Big Foot and the Chupacabra. Nor am I a big hockey fan, but I now see how the Jersey team name makes sense.

But back to Bousman and THE BARRENS. Although we still await releases for his MOTHER’S DAY and 11-11-11, here’s what he told Variety about his intentions with the new film:

“I don’t want to turn it into a cheesy creature feature. It’s about the characters for me, and having watched Stephen for years on ‘True Blood,’ I have no doubt he’s the right leading man.”

Do you agree? Is Moyer a bona fide leading man?
