It’s been awhile since we gave you an update on how horror flicks have fared at the box-office. Unfortunately, the news we have for the weekend of August 19-21 isn’t too encouraging. Peep it…
At a whopping cost of $90 million, DreamWorks’ FRIGHT NIGHT redo opened with a paltry $8.3 million in tickets sold. 3D tickets at that. Very disappointing for a flick that looked to parlay its namesake into a tidy fortune. The fact the flick got relatively positive reviews adds injury to the insult.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN, also a remake, hardly made a splash either. The flick, which surely had a gaudy budget, registered an even $10 million in its opening frame. Not too impressive at all.
RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES on the other hand, one of the summer’s surprise hits, continued to impress in its third week of business. The flick added another $16.3 million, all but ensuring the flick as a top-ten summer earner when all is said and done. I wonder what it says about prequels rather than remakes…one the former has done well, the latter not so much.
Continuing with that logic, FINAL DESTINATION 5, a sequel, padded its number with an extra $7.7 million in its third week. The cheaply made horror film is already in the black!
