Last month came the news that Joe Carnahan’s killer wolf-pack story, THE GREY, had been acquired by Open Road Films. Part of the deal included releasing the film this year on as many as 4,000 screens. Well, that contract was not entirely honored, as the distribution house just tagged the film with an early 2012 release instead.

From Variety, Open Road will put THE GREY in theaters beginning January 27, 2012.

Given the date…set in the dog days of studio dumping season…I wonder if THE GREY is any good. With Liam Neeson and Frank Grillo, how can it not be? Hopefully the early year release is just to make good on the initial deal, which means getting the picture out as soon as possible.

Also featuring Dallas Roberts, James Badge Dale, Dermot Mulroney, Nonso Anozie and Joe Anderson – the flick follows a group of roughnecks left stranded by a plane crash right in the hunting zone of a pack of rogue wolves on the frozen Alaskan tundra.

THE GREY opens January 27, 2012.
