Deadline claims that Dimension, largely a genre film purveyor, has put in motion plans to adapt David Cronenberg’s 1981 sci-fi horror flick SCANNERS to the small screen. Word is Alexandre Aja (PIRANHA, HAUTE TENSION) will exec-produce and potentially direct the series pilot.
Although Dimension did not produce the original 1981 film, the Weinsteins bought the rights to the property many years ago. Originally thought to work well as a theatrical rehash, Dimension has, in the wake of success of shows like “Dexter” and “The Walking Dead”, decided to try it as a serial. David Goyer wrote a pair of drafts for the film version, but they will not be used for the TV adapatation.
Written by Cronenberg, SCANNERS goes like this:
Darryl Revok is the most powerful of all the scanners, and is the head of the underground scanner movement for world domination. Scanners have great psychic power, strong enough to control minds; they can inflict enormous pain/damage on their victims. Doctor Paul Ruth finds a scanner that Revok hasn’t, and converts him to their cause – to destroy the underground movement.
