Now that filmmaker Ron Howard doesn’t have THE DARK TOWER to stress about he’s moving on to greener pastures, and stories about people murdering others in the name of God. Sounds like an easy transition right?

I’m talking about the Jon Krakauer novel UNDER THE BANNER OF HEAVEN, which Warner Bros. have just tapped Dustin Lance Black to adapt into a screenplay for Howard to direct. Sounds like a pretty solid duo to me so I’m definitely intrigued. I’m sure most of you are as well so let’s get into the rundown for this one:

Under the Banner Of Heaven focuses on two brothers who murdered the wife and infant daughter of their younger brother. The killers claimed they were acting on orders from God, consistent with their interpretation of a fundamentalist interpretation that goes back to the formation of Mormonism. The brothers were members of a splinter group called the School of Prophets, which adhered to original tenets of the faith that included polygamy and a belief that true believers could speak directly with God. These were rooted as the faith grew to a mainstream appeal, but the brothers remain convinced they were obeying God’s command when they committed the heinous crime.

Hmm… Sounds a lot like FRAILTY to me. And I dug the sh*t out of FRAILTY! As did The Arrow. Now mind you UNDER THE BANNER OF HEAVEN might not be as dark and brutal as FRAILTY but that’ll be something we’re going to keep our eyes on.

Howard will also be producing the flick with his Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer, Shannon Costello, Jason Bateman and Stephanie Davis. Imagine’s Erica Huggins will executive produce.

So what do you guys think of UNDER THE BANNER OF HEAVEN? Any potential? Anyone out there actually read this thing wanna shed some light on it for us? Let’s get some conversation going below as we wait for more updates for UNDER THE BANNER OF HEAVEN.
