Lasse Hallstrom’s first Swedish feature in nearly 25 years, THE HYPNOTIST, has entranced its first actor.

Mikael Persbrandt, who is starring in Peter Jackson’s THE HOBBIT films and was the lead in last year’s Best Foreign Language Oscar winner IN A BETTER WORLD, will star in the psychological thriller, based on the novel of the same name by Lars Kepler. Perbrandt is a well-known thespian in his native Sweden.

The synopsis: After a young woman and her parents are murdered by a killer determined to wipe out the entire family, Detective Inspector Joona Linna works with a psychiatrist to hypnotize the son who narrowly escaped death in order to find the one surviving daughter before the murderer does.

Sweden’s Svensk Filmindustri and Sonet Film are on board as co-producers. Shooting will begin on Jan 9, 2012.
