Gary Ross headed to the Outback, Carey Mulligan attached to the sci-fi actioner

Anybody buying Carey Mulligan as an action star?

Variety has it that Ms. Mulligan (AN EDUCATION, below) is attached to star in a sci-fi actioner called OUTBACK, which, as you might have guessed, will take place in the Australian wild. Gary Ross (THE HUNGER GAMES, above) will bark orders through the megaphone on this one.

No details have been given regarding OUTBACK, but it’s being written by Nissar Modi from a story originally conceived by he and Ross. GK Films is producing, with Ross and Tobey Maguire co-producing.

For Carey, she continues her hot streak after breaking out in the 2009 film AN EDUCATION. She can be seen this September in DRIVE, has the Steve McQueen drama SHAME completed, and films THE GREAT GATSBY this summer for Baz Luhrmann.

So, given the lady’s resume, how do you see her faring in a hard-boiled sci-fi action flick? She’s still in her 20s so she’s probably lissome enough, no? Remember, she was at one point in the running to star in Fincher’s THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, so maybe she’s out to prove she can do “bad ass” with the rest of them. What do you think?
