Carrie finds its leads! No, not the movie, the Off-Broadway revival!

A revival of one of the most notorious flops in Broadway history is currently underway: CARRIE! (Check out its Wikipedia page for its sordid history.) Ah, but this is an overhauled version of the work, taking place in the present day and, one would have to imagine, shedding some of the more ridiculous elements that helped make it, at the time of its 1988 opening and quick closing (5 days after its official premiere!), a supremely expensive bust.

Molly Ranson (pictured) will play the title character while three-time Tony nominee Marin Mazzie will portray Carrie’s nutso mother Margaret. Stafford Arima will direct the MCC Theatre production; additional casting has yet to be announced. Original bookwriter Lawrence D. Cohen, composer Michael Gore and lyricist Dean Pitchford. (Cohen wrote the screenplay for the Brian de Palma film adaptation as well.)

Incidentally, these are the same names that were attached back in 2009, when the musical was going through preliminary readings. Obviously, they’re forging ahead, so it should be interesting to see what results are yielded.

CARRIE: THE MUSICAL will open in January 2012 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in NYC… Hopefully commercials advertising the show will be better than this 1988 ad, which makes it look like a lost episode of “Freddy’s Nightmares”.
