Behind only J.J. Abrams’ SUPER 8, Troy Nixey’s DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK is the one major genre release of the summer I’m looking forward to most. After-all, it’s co-written by Guillermo del Toro, and looks to be the king of retro creature-feature studios rarely embrace these days. And we finally have the first trailer for the film below!

Keeping with the mood of fantastique PAN’S LABYRINTH and THE ORPHANAGE boasted, DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK centers on:

Sally Hurst (Bailee Madison), a lonely, withdrawn child, who has just arrived in Rhode Island to live with her father Alex (Guy Pearce) and his new girlfriend Kim (Katie Holmes) at the 19th-century mansion they are restoring. While exploring the sprawling estate, the young girl discovers a hidden basement, undisturbed since the strange disappearance of the mansion’s builder a century ago. When Sally unwittingly lets loose a race of ancient, dark-dwelling creatures who conspire to drag her down into the mysterious house’s bottomless depths, she must convince Alex and Kim that it’s not a fantasy—before the evil lurking in the dark consumes them all.

Alan Dale, Jack Thompson, Julia Blake, Emelia Burns, Nicholas Bell, Dylan Young, Edwina Ritchard and Garry McDonald all round out the cast.

DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK sees the light August 26th.
