Not much of a comic-book movie head am I, but one character that always kept my eye is WOLVERINE, and since horror news is relatively slow at the moment, why not take some time out to update the status of the stalled Fox sequel…
With Darren Aronosky departing from WOLVERINE two months ago, the studio has been deliberating on who to replace him with. And while a decision has yet to be made, word from Variety is that there are now eight names in the running to helm the expensive tent-pole outing. Care to know who those names are?
Jose Padilha, Doug Liman, Antoine Fuqua, Mark Romanek, Justin Lin, Gavin O’Connor, James Mangold and Gary Shore. Those are your eight names. A hodgepodge of indie cred and blockbuster experience. Let’s break this down a bit further…
Jose Padilha (THE ELITE SQUAD) is unlikely in my opinion, as he recently signed on to direct the ROBOCOP reboot for MGM. Remember, Aronofsky was also once attached to direct ROBOCOP, and now that he’s off WOLVERINE, would Fox really want Padilha to clean up what Aronofsky left behind twice?
Doug Liman has proven himself with THE BOURNE IDENTITY and MR. & MRS. SMITH, but his last film FAIR GAME didn’t fare so well. His schedule seems open though, having just completed the TV movie I JUST WANT MY PANTS BACK.
Fuqua has been attached to direct THE TOMB, but with Arnie’s current domestic strife, that project may be dead. He’s also pretty invested in a Tupac biopic, so my guess he’s a bit busy for WOLVERINE.
Mark Romanek is currently filming the Fox TV show “Locke & Key,” and with the success of indie flick NEVER LET ME GO, he may be a wise choice for the studio.
Justin Lin has been attached to helm TERMINATOR 5, and with the success of FAST FIVE, expect him to do FAST SIX.
Gavin O’Connor just completed WARRIOR, the MMA tale with Tom Hardy. He’s an interesting up and comer.
Mangold (IDENTITY, 3: 10 TO YUMA) has had genre success, but is currently in pre-production on the TV series “The 2-2.”
Lastly, Gary Shore seems the least likely. He only has one credit, THE DRAFT in 2006, to his name.
